Successful Test Run of DANIELI W+K’s New ERW Tube Mill

The new ERW precision tube welding plant for Salzgitter Mannesmann Präzisrohr (SMP) situated in Hamm/Germany has successfully started its test run in January 2013.

The plant has been designed for the production of thick-walled tubes in the diameter range between 20 and 60 mm at a max. wall thickness of 6 mm. The diameter/wall thickness ratio is 6:1 at tensile strengths of 800 N / mm².

DANIELI W+K has developed together with the customer an optimized and integrated production process which meets the high quality requirements in the automotive industry.

A particular feature of the line is the special coil storage unit to take a total of six coils with an automatic coil feeding facility, thus enabling an almost automated strip preparation. For the production of thick-walled tubes a total of nine forming stands are provided. The stands are individually driven via AC servomotors. All shafts adjustments are motorized via AC servomotors with precision gearboxes and encoders. All preset values are reproducible and stored in a recipe management system.

The complete line conception includes an integrated DANIELI W+K finishing line. This is capable to cut sample tubes which have been produced in the corresponding lengths. After the visual inspection, both tube ends are beveled in the beveling machine. Subsequently two tubes at once are placed into the blow-out station where the inside scarf is chopped and rinsed out. The emulsion is blown out of two tubes simultaneously as well.

The finished tubes are automatically bundled into hexagonal packages, strapped and weighed. Thanks to the separate tube feeding and singling unit it is possible to use the bundling machine independently from the tube welding line, for example during the time when the tool changing procedure takes place.

The new ERW precision tube production line guarantees the fastest tool change-over, smoothest handling of the tube surfaces as well as an optimized personnel deployment.
